The difference between short cut carbon fiber and long cut carbon fiber

1. Strength and modulus

There is a significant difference in strength and modulus between short cut carbon fiber and long cut carbon fiber. The direct tensile strength and modulus of short cut carbon fiber are usually more than 50% higher than those of long cut carbon fiber, which is also the main reason why short cut carbon fiber is suitable for reinforcing composite materials. Long cut carbon fiber has relatively lower strength and modulus, but better toughness.

2. Surface condition

The surface of short cut carbon fiber is smooth and difficult to bond with resin, making it prone to fiber short cracks, which can affect the strength of composite materials. The surface of long cut carbon fiber is rough and can bond well with resin.

3. Scope of application

Short cut carbon fiber is suitable for reinforcing composite materials, which can improve their strength and modulus, but attention should be paid to the problem of fiber short cracks. Long cut carbon fiber is suitable for manufacturing high-strength workpieces, such as ships, airplanes, vehicles, etc.
